All Change at 2008 Annual General Meeting
Chester Boughton Hall’s recent Annual General Meeting saw a number of officer changes for the 2009 season.
After three successful years in charge of 1st XI affairs, Stephen Ogilby will hand over the skipper’s armband to Jim Gillson for next year. Eddie Roberts takes over vice-captaincy duties.
The 2nd XI also sees a change with Andy Roberts returning to Chester to captain the side. Brother of Eddie, Andy’s roots are at Chester and he returns from living away from the area for some time. Andy Robinson takes a well deserved ‘rest’ but will support Roberts in a vice captaincy role.
Having helped steady the 3rd XI ship in 2008, John Thistlewood is pleased to vice captain in 2009, supporting new young blood in Dave Fisher.
Paul Ducker, ably supported by Cliff Mallows, continues to look after all things 4th team.
Tribute to Ogilby
Reflecting on the year, outgoing Chairman Jim Law highlighted the role that Steve Ogilby had played in captaining the side over the last three years. Steve’s achievements included a promotion and an appearance at 20/20 Finals day two years in succession. In addition, he led the side to sixth position in 2008 (effectively 1 wicket away from fourth in the last match). Ogilby also had his most effective season for Chester with the bat scoring 513 runs, whilst he continued to demonstrate his untouchable class behind the stumps.
Thanks too for the support of Andy Robinson with the 2nd XI and time in 2009 for the ‘Big Man’ to attempt to (again) patch his body up and take more of a back seat role. Plaudits also went to John Thistlewood and Paul Ducker for the way they continually keep the third and fourth teams challenging for honours and bringing the juniors through.
Ladies Night
This was very much too ‘Ladies Night’ and Annette Axton brought a good contingent of the CHH Ladies side that won the treble in 2008.
Committee Support
There was an appreciation too for the role that the individual committee members have played in 2008 including Dave Killoran and his ongoing development of the junior set up, the junior coaches themselves and Cliff Mallow’s work on Club Mark. Other unsung heroes include the likes of Brian Gresty (who continues to oversee house and ground matters), his groundsman son Loic, Gary Steffan and the bar support and Chris King’s unstinting attempts to ensure members pay their fees. Jeremy Jordan continued to chair selection admirably and John Legry’s secretarial and fixture support was second to none. The likes of John Roberts, Malcolm Tice and Roger Milne also continued to offer invaluable support and Chris Fleet with the Over 40s.
Financial Turbulence
In wishing all players well in 2008, Law also highlighted the continued need to for all players and members to get behind the Club and support on both a financial and assistance basis. Whilst thanking the sponsors for their contributions, it was recognised that support in 2009 will be more challenging than ever and is thus even more crucial that individuals help the Club in difficult economic times. Treasurer Martin Huber reiterated the current financial challenge for all as he presented the 2008 accounts.
2009 Officers
The skippers and club officers were duly elected and best wishes given for 2009.
President’s Remarks
President Bruce Jones closed the meeting with his personal thanks and support and highlighted Lauran Griffiths’ terrific achievements in making the England World Cup Squad in Australia in 2009.

Andy Robinson's eloquent speech looked after the 2nd XI and Jim Gillson hosted the 1st XI awards.

Lauren Griffiths in England World Cup Squad
Lauren Griffiths in England World Cup Squad
Following her succesful stint in this Summer's academy squad, Lauren Griffiths has now received the ultimate call up as she has been selected to be part of England's 2009 World Cup squad in Australia.
Lauren recently jetted off to Melbourne where she will play club cricket for the winter and she'll fly up to join the rest of the squad at their Sydney base in March.
Lauren has played her cricket at Boughton Hall for many years and is captain of the Tytherington Club who won the ECB Premier League North title. This is in addition to playing her part in CBH's treble winning side and skippering Cheshie Ladies. The 21 year old has been on the verge of the national side for sometime.
Before the world cup, there's the little matter of a November series in India too.
There's a couple of proud parents in Guildon Sutton and a very proud Club back at Filkins Lane

Robin Fisher

After 5 years with Chester, Robin Fisher is to return to play for Alvanley in 2009.
Following a year on the sidelines with a broken leg, Robin is going back to his roots after an illustrious career with amongst others, Bootle, Cheshire and ourselves.
A popular character around the Club, Robin has been a great influence on a number of youngsters and contributed hugely to the Club's development over the last few seasons.
Robin assures us that he will still see him from time to time and he will still support the Bar (which breathes a sigh of relief).
We thank Robin for his time with us and wish him well at Alvanley.

A tremendous achievement for the 22 year old all-rounder, Cruickshank will play a part in the historic series that starts on October 25.

Wirral League U15 Champions!

Congratulations to Paul Williams' U15 CBH side who have become Wirral League Champions for 2008. They clinched the title with a fine win at Caldy.
In a rain disrupted summer, Chester reached the final, with the important victory against Oxton proving decisive. The final was played against Caldy on a green, very damp wicket. After being invited to bat CBH scored 172-9 off 40 overs which was an excellent total. The opening pair of batsmen, Mike Robinson (53) and Ollie Thompson (23) provided put on 87 for the first wicket - a super platform! Matt Robinson, Jack Williams and Joe Killoran added vital runs too in a real team effort. Caldy in reply were bowled out for 92 with Joe Killoran taking 4-15.
The Champagne moment was the first ball of Katie Coppacks’ spell. The ball was full in length, swung away late and found the outside edge. It flew into the gap between keeper and the fielder at third slip. Another missed chance, but Joe Killoran had different ideas. He took off like a salmon and plucked the ball out of the air with his left hand!
An enjoyable end to a rather wet summer! Well done to all the boys. And girl.
Team (back row l-r) S. Treen, O. Thompson, M. Jones, J. Williams, Mi Robinson, M. Treen (front row l-r) K. Copack, J. Killoran, J. Mackenzie (capt), Ma Robinson, M. Williams, H. Killoran (coach)

Junior Success in Northop Hall 6's
Congratulations to the CBH 6 a side junior team who were runners up at Northop Hall's 6 a side tournament on July 22.
The tournament was part of a number of matches and events held at Northop Hall CC during the summer to celebrate the Club's centenary.
Eventual winners were the hosts but our boys did themselves proud.
The day started at 10am at Northop Hall Cricket Club. Boughton Hall were drawn against Prestatyn and Penn (Wolverhampton). The day was a long one but two wins and the two highest totals of the competition secured our place in the final against Northop Hall, where the pace of the bowling attack caused our young team some problems. A good day that was enjoyed all round. Thankyou to Northop Hall for the invite.
Team - Robert Evans (Captain), Glen Coppack, Jack McKenzie, Michael Robinson, Oliver Thompson and Jack Williams
Mascots - Harry Killoran, Joe Killoran, Matthew Robinson
...and thanks to the parents for their help and to Nia Williams for the photographs.

Summer Ball Photos!
Never mind Britain's got talent, so has Chester!
See here one Steve Coppack (looking slightly more sensible than usual) doing a fine performance of a .... Well, a fine performance anyway.
Vince Earl made us laugh, Heathcotes fed us well, it rained outside but inside we drank and we danced and we sang and a good time was had by all at the 2008 Summer Ball.
Many thanks to those that made it and helped support the Club.

Lauren in England Frame
Congratulations to our own Lauren Griffiths who has been selected to play for an England Academy side against England at Taunton on June 15.
Lauren will take her place as wicketkeeper making her effectively one step away from the full England side. The match involves the 15 players who toured Australia/New Zealand in the winter plus the next best 9 players.
The match itself promises to be a terrific occasion as it acts as a curtain raiser for the Somerset v Middlesex 20/20.
All the best to Lauren from her friends at Chester.
PS - Lauren, you can blame your Father for providing the photograph!

Boy Band Baby!

Another dodgy photo has reached us of one of our players at a very early age. Who is the the smiling cheeky chappie destined to grow into a blond bombshell and big time boy band member?
All those submitting correct guesses will have their names put into a beany hat. The first pulled out will win a tub of Guildon Sutton hair gell.

Brilcream Boy!
In a variation on the theme of 'who is the baby?', we present an adhoc series of 'what did they used to look like?'
First in the series is this little charmer. Who is the Brilcream Boy looking like a shamrock wouldn't melt in his mouth?. It's a certain CBH cricketer to be sure!
Send us your pix!

Hurry up Harry!
In the words of Sham 69 (can you remember back to 1978??)...Come on, come on, hurry up Harry, we're going down the Club...
Our Harold has not been too well of late but after a short spell in hospital, is now back at home and kicking his heels whilst brother Joe takes care of the cricket action.
The good news is that he's got his smile back, should be on the cricket field before too long and is surviving in the short term with a pile of DVDs and cricket on the telly.
Hurry up Harry, we need you back

Cheer Up Fishy!!
Q. Why is Fishy smoking a pipe when he's just broken his leg whilst abseiling for the Cheshire Constabulary Formation Dancing Team?
He's the proof of why climbing rock faces when you should be perfecting your bowling skills is not sensible.
Get well soon Fishy and lay off the red wine!
PS - Spare a thought for Mrs Fisher.....

Skipper Ties the Knot at Last!
Congratulations to CBH 1st Team Skipper Stephen Ogilby and his new wife Danielle who finally tied the knot on March 6.
The wedding took place at a lavish ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa where many of Stephen and Danielle's friends joined the family to celebrate.
A week's festivities culminated in an outdoor ceremony in glorious Constantia, a suburb of Cape Town.
Whilst most of the week's events are best left to the magination, the memory of bride, groom and families complete in wedding gear in a swimming pool at 3 o'clock in the morning will remain with many!
As will Stephen's wedding speech and a storming duet by the two best men at the wedding breakfast.
After the wedding Stephen, Danielle and young Freddie headed off for a honeymoon in Mauritius.
It is hoped that Stephen will return by April to take up 1st XI captaincy duties!

Cruikshank for 2008
Darren Cruikshank is CBH's overseas player for the 2008 season.
Darren is no stranger to the Premier League and joins the Club after a number of succesful seasons with neighbours Christleton. He is relishing the season ahead and will join up with his team mates just before the first match of the season on April 19..
The Trinidadian all-rounder will add much needed pace to the bowling attack whilst his batting will bolster the top of the order.
Darren will arrive in the UK on the back of a heavy season in the West Indies and has many friends in Chester.
He will be the first West Indian to represent the Club since the famous 80s and 90s days when the likes of Winston Benjamin and Curtley Ambrose played at the Club.

Archive 2009
I'm Andy Pembroke - get me out of here!
Time again for our occasional series of 'what our boys get up to in the Winter'
And would you know it? Most of our lads go over to Aus for a bit of sunshine whilst they hone their cricketing skills for a few months.
Not so Andy Pembroke.
He seems to be spending some time in the jungle with his mate Ant (or is it Dec)?
|
Pembroke Takes Over 2s
Andy Pembroke will captain CBH's 2nd XI in 2010.
The popular batsman - who was leading scorer for the 2s in 2009 -moved north to Chester from the south west five years ago and has made his mark in both first and second team cricket.
Andy succeeds Andy Roberts who has stepped down due to personal commitments but is likely to be available later in the season.

Chester Boughton Hall CC 1987-1991
Whilst trawling through the archives we've come across this old photograph from our Liverpool Competition days.
Analysts have narrowed the period of the picture down to a team from somewhere around 1987-1991. This was one of our least succesful periods, noted by the team slogan printed underneath.
Clearly the two umpires on each end are Roger Bellamy and Don Speakman and we think the surly so and so in the dark top in the back row is a young Jeremy Jordan.
We think Brian Gresty is second from left in the back row doing a Norman Wisdom impression but we're a little thrown as to who the nice sweet chap is in the front row wearing his mother's knitted yellow jumper. Eddie Roberts perhaps? The gent in the front row on the left (clearly sitting on something rather uncomfortable - maybe a rubber ring?) bears a canny resemblance to Bruce Jones but we can't be sure and we think this may have been from around the time he was doing missionary work in Peru and took a gap year. His rather splendid Kookabora bat is a giveaway though. The mysterious figure partly obscured in the background could possibly be Match Manager Roger Miln propped up against the wall after an arduous day administering brillcream and herbal tea. Any ideas on a postcard please - and send in any old photos.

Roger the Dodger takes Ron Fleet Memorial Trophy for 2009
All smiles for Roger Miln (pictured here doing his infamous 'spinning tray' routine at the Cheshire League Presentation Dinner at Mere) as he was awarded the Chester Boughton Hall Ron Fleet Memorial Trophy for 2009 at AGM.
The Trophy was presented to him by Chris Fleet on behalf of his late father and by President, Bruce Jones to honour a number of achievements by Chester's finest Barcardi tester. The trophy is presented annually to recognise outstanding service to the Club.
Apart from Matchday Manager duties, Roger spent much of the Summer sat astride a heavy roller and spent an inordinate amount of time helping out around the ground as he has done for many years.
Roger wil also step down from secretarial duties on behalf of the CBH Directors this year after some 12 years at the helm.
Roger was delighted with his award and needless to say the first thing he did (after checking Brian Gresty had engraved his name correctly) was to fill the trophy with ten large barcardi and cokes and offer a slurp to all.
Some things never change! Well deserved Rog.

Warren Picks up Premier League Player of the Year
Congratulations to CBH's Warren Goodwin who got the vote of Premier League Player of the Year for 2009.
The vote is cast annually by players from all Premier League clubs and Warren took the award ahead of Neston's Jack Smith, Oulton Park's Nathan Dumelow and Alderley Edge's Jason Whittaker.
The 23 year old had a sparkling season with the bat becoming Chester's leading run scorer in a season and the first Chester player to score over 1000 runs since Steve Wundkee. In addition, he had a good season opening the batting for Cheshire.
Warren is pictured receiving his award from League Chairman David Humpage at the annual League Awards Dinner at the Mere Golf and Country Club.
Full details of all winners are published in the League's October newsletter.

1st XI 2009 Review of the Season
There is no doubt that it was a testing season. With no wins during the first half of the campaign Chester shook things up mid way through to bolster both batting and bowling.
Jim Gillson's injury meant a challenging time for Eddie Roberts as stand-in skipper yet there was much to admire too. Ashley Shaw was a great find as was Trevor Fabien. Hayden Butterworth adapted well in his first season in the UK and then of course there were Warren Goodwin's runs.
There was little success in any of the cups but in the end Gillson's young side came good. The highlights were undoubtedly the last two games of the season when they pulled things round against Natwich and Bowdon to finish eighth after staring relegation in the face up until the penultimate Saturday.
The 2009 1st XI Season Review is available as a word document or as a pdf.PDF Word Document

Phil's 50s Finale
Pictured right, Cheshire Over 50s skipper and Chester Boughton Hall stalwart Phil Thomas after the Over 50s Final against Derbyshire at Derby CCC.
A good knock for Phil with 34 but alas Cheshire could only muster 136 from their 45 overs and Derbyshire went on to win by 10 wickets.
A good season's performance from Phil's side though that saw some 12 games and some notable scalps on route to the final including Surrey and Yorkshire.
And the sun shone on finals day too with a decent size crowd to see the game.
Time to put the feet up and look forward to 2010.

And We Know How to Party!!!
Saturday night after the cricket will never be the same again!
After a great win at Bowdon, the 2nds securing survival and great seasons for the 3rds and 4ths, all sides (and a few hangers-on!) joined forces after their respective matches as Boughton Hall had an impromptu party!
It was Bar Olympics time stage-managed by Jim Gillson. Out came the yard of ale, the spoons and the old boat race. And that was just the women!
Jeremy Jordan took the brunt of it with birthday celebrations, we cheered Jonty Hedgecoe's 100, Hayden Butterworth made an emotional end of term speech and Warren Goodwin celebrated his 1000+ runs.
Some of the photographs have been held back to protect the innocent but may be offered for money later. In the meantime, click on the link for more revelations. Photos

Season ends on High as Bowdon Toppled
Bowdon 159 (54.1 overs), Chester Boughton Hall 162-6 (51.1 overs). Chester won by 4 wickets Match Report Play Cricket
Matt Griffith's 67 not out and Ollie Law's 6-46 (both left) grabbed the headlines but it was a fine all round display as Chester Boughton Hall ended their season on a high with a dramatic 4 wicket win at Bowdon. Staring at relegation a week ago it was a tremendous last ditch effort with back-to-back wins over the two sides challenging Oulton Park for the championship, Chester had a major say in the end of season shake up having also defeated Nantwich the week before. The day started with Bowdon needing to beat Chester and hope results elsewhere suited but with Oulton Park getting a maximum points haul - ironically against Nantwich - it was they who were crowned champions.
Great end for the 2nd XI too as their draw with Poynton secured safety with Jonty Hedgecoe hitting a big ton and Jack Williams 71 in a massive score of 331. Victory to end a very succesful season for the 3rds too.

Over 40s Finals Day at Chester
Ultimately rain spoiled Over 40s Finals Day 2009 at Chester but not before an enthusiastic crowd had witnessed some good competitive cricket.
Neston overcame Nantwich Cavaliers in a low scoring semi final whilst Urmston had the better of Bollington.
The final got to the second innings before rain interupted and drew a close to the afternoon's entertainment.
As a result Neston (on the toss of a coin) will now host a replay at Parkgate against Urmston on Sunday September 23.

Graeme Fowler Lunch at Chester
A good time was had by all as Ex Lancs and England opening batsman Graeme Fowler royaly entertained 100 people at a lunch at Chester Boughton Hall.
With tales from his early Lancashire days through to his time with Sky TV and as a summariser on Test Match Special, the Durham University coach was warmly received. Fitting too on an afternoon when one of his proteges - England captain Andrew Strauss made 166 not out in the test against Australia at Lords.
Greame is pictured flanked seemingly by two burly bouncers - Club Captain Chris Fleet and Chairman, Jim Law.

Cheshire Centenary Match at Chester
Cheshire CCC celebrated their 100th birthday with a special marque lunch and match against an MCCA XI at Chester Boughton Hall
Whilst overnighjt rain meant the match was delayed and revereted to a 20/20 format, a large crowd enjoyed a pleasant afternoon in the sunshine and an excellent lunch.
Chairman John Pickup welcomed players, officials and supporters whilst ex Cheshire all-rounder Bob Cooke spoke fondly about his time with the County. President Gerry Hardstaff thanked all present and copped some flack for his choice of an 'All Time' Cheshire XI! A commerative brochure and celebration tie and mug were also produced and made available.
The result of the match didn't quite befit the occasion but there weren't too many complants about either that or Jean Hall's excellent cake! Photos

Ladies Night
CBH recently hosted it's first 'Ladies Night' with a glittering array of local businesses demonstrating everything from local fashions to makeovers, botox to hair styling and crafts to delicatessence.
There were also a number of live presentations and an appeal on behalf of the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Organised by Yvonne Fleet the event was well attended and a resounding success as well as helping to boost club funds. Keep an eye out for the next one!

Beer Festival Success!
A great time was had by all at Chester Boughton Hall's first Beer Festival held over Easter in the grand marquee.
With six sessions in all from Thursday to Saturday, numbers were good and the atmosphere excellent. With live music at each session, drinkers sampled a wide range of ales from across the UK whilst others supped wine and bottled lager.
As the old Spring Zing, Spitting Feathers and Ginger Tosser were supped, the party and dancing went on.
A particular thank you to the ladies of Chester Hockey Club who put in a full day shift on the Friday and led the dancing until close of play. Hang-overs all round on Saturday!
Great music too with the likes of Reckless Elbow on stage. Well done to the hard working team of organisers, many thanks too to those who sponsored barrels and here's to 2010!
